Stop Snoring – Do You Have A Snoring Problem?
Snoring is an incredibly prevalent condition suffered by up to 60% of men, and 40% of women.[1]
From time to time everyone snores. But, if you snore pretty much all the time while sleeping, you may actually have a real snoring problem.
People often joke about snoring, yet it can create serious problems within a family. Many couples can’t sleep in the same room because of snoring.
Snoring can be disruptive to your sleep and the restful sleep of an entire household. Exposing each household member to the risks of sleep deprivation.
Snoring is almost always evidence of a sleep breathing problem. Sleep-related breathing disorders puts the sufferer at risk of some serious medical conditions: High blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, alzheimers, diabetes, depression and others.
Snoring is known to cause sleep deprivation, daytime drowsiness, irritability, lack of focus
reduced sex drive and significant psychological and social damage to snorers.
If you snore, it’s important to realize that your snoring may be reaking havoc on your health and that of your partner and or household. The sooner you find a solution that works for you to stop snoring, the better.
What causes snoring?
As you doze off and progress from a lighter sleep to a deep sleep, the muscles in the roof of your mouth (soft palate), tongue and throat relax. The tissues in your throat can relax enough that they vibrate and may partially obstruct your airway. The more narrowed your airway, the more forceful the airflow becomes. Tissue vibration increases, and your snoring grows louder.[2]
Contributing Factors:
Snoring may indicate the presence of more serious underlying medical conditions. Such as, sleep apnea, deviated nasal septum (a crooked partition between the nostrils) or enlarged tonsils. These can all block or obstruct the movement of air through the airway.
Some other contributors are: too much alcohol consumption before bedtime, Nasal congestion.
Approximately 10% of snorers suffer from sleep apnea.[1] Sleep Apnea sufferers are actually deprived of oxygen for prolonged periods of time during sleep, which can have a massive impact on their health (with potentially fatal consequences) if the disorder isn’t properly treated. Sleep apnea is often characterized by loud snoring followed by periods of silence that can last 10 seconds or more.[2]
Thus, to stop snoring the key would be to eliminate or reduce the obstruction or constriction of the airway, to permit normal unhindered breathing.
Your first step should be to consult with your Physician or medical professional. If you have any underlying medical disorders that cause snoring, they must be treated immediately and properly.
How to Stop Snoring?
Everyone is different so you may have to try many different techniques, variations or combinations in order to find the right stop snoring solution for you. Be sure to keep in mind what is specifically causing You to snore. There is generally no point using a solution that targets a problem that you don’t have.
Here are a few tips you should try to reduce, or stop snoring:
It would be wise to see your doctor and possibly have a sleep study done.
1. Avoid alcohol consumption close to bedtime it
relaxes your jaw and throat muscles too severely.
2. Stop smoking -irritates breathing passages causing
swelling closing them off and straining respiration
3 loose weight -reduce excess fatty tissue around the neck
to reduce the strain on your windpipe
4. Use a pillow
5. Sleep on your side
6. Clear the nasal passages -try using nasal strips
7. Nasal spray
8. Medication -if nothing else works
9. Surgery – a last resort – it doesn’t always work and may not
be suitable or necessary for everyone that snores.
To find your solution to stop snoring, first specifically determine why YOU snore. It is not necessarily the same reason as anyone else. Your snoring could actually be the result of multiple problems. Not every solution will work for you.
