Sleep Problems

no comments

While sleep apnea might not sound like a very serious problem it can have very serious effects on your life. Experts agree that in order to function properly, most adults need around seven or eight hours of sleep each night and most of this should be uninterrupted to allow the brain to get into its deep sleep rhythms. If you have sleep apnea, however you’re probably being awakened many times during the night and thus unable to get into a deep sleep.

People with sleep apnea often wake up unrefreshed even though they’ve been in bed for eight hours. Sometimes they might wake up with a headache, sore throat or dry mouth. If you’re not getting the necessary sleep at night or not feeling good when you wake up then chances are you are not performing your best at work and may even be falling asleep at your desk, or worse yet while driving.

Sleep apnea can affect your personal life too. If you’re not getting enough sleep, your probably cranky and not too much fun to be around. Of course, this can have adverse effects on any relationship and also diminishes your enjoyment of life.

So if you have sleep apnea, you’d see why it would be important to get to your doctor in order to have the appropriate diagnosis, wouldn’t you? Then why are so many people suffering with this when there are treatments available? The simple reason is that over 90% of the people with sleep apnea don’t even know that they have it!

Sleep apnea can be a very subtle problem and because it is happening while you’re asleep, you might not even remember them waking up in the middle of the night. Therefore, you probably want to be aware of some other symptoms that might indicate the need for a trip to the doctor. Here are some things to look out for:

1. Loud snoring (many people that don’t have sleep apnea snore however this may be an indication).
2. Choking or gasping for air during the night.
3. A waking suddenly.
4. Waking up in the morning and feeling like you didn’t get enough sleep.
5. Waking up in the middle of the night in a sweat.
6. Being sleepy during the day for no good reason.
7. Waking up with a dry mouth, headache or sore throat.

Sleep apnea can be caused by a few things, the most common type called obstructive sleep apnea is caused by an obstruction that blocks your breathing. This can be either that you have large adenoids or tonsils, you have a smaller than normal airway due to the shape of your neck, your soft palate is getting in the way of your breathing or your tongue and throat muscles relax too much when you are sleeping.

The two other types of sleep apnea are central sleep apnea which is very rare and is the cause of a central nervous system disorder caused by a brain infection, brain tumor, stroke or injury and mixed sleep apnea which is a combination of the central sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea.

In addition to wreaking havoc on your relationships and your enjoyment of life, sleep apnea can have some pretty serious health problems as well. When you stop breathing during the night not only does it cause sleep deprivation, it also causes oxygen deprivation. These can in turn affect her life in the following ways:

1. Daytime tiredness

2. Emotional imbalance

3. Poor mental function

4. Compromised immune system

5. Low energy

6. Slow reaction time

7. Heart abnormalities

8. High blood pressure and stroke

9. Memory problems

10. Weight gain

11. Sexual dysfunction

12. Depression

13. More apt to falsely driving, thus causing a car accident

If you do have sleep apnea, however, don’t despair! There are quite a few treatments available and you should be able to find something that suit you. Some of the treatments involve lifestyle changes such as losing weight, sleeping on your side and not smoking. Some make use of medications and devices that help open airways. And if nothing else helps, there are some surgeries that can help relieve sleep apnea.

Sleep Apnea Appliance

no comments

The positioning of the sleep apnea machine to the face and the head is done by means of a device that needs to be comfortable for the user. A sleep apnea headgear usually includes two T-shaped parts one for the front and the other other for the rear side of the head. Furthermore, there is a special strap that is attached to the chin that is responsible for keeping the mask in the right position. Sleep apnea headgear is used for both CPAP and BiPAP machines that depend on masks to send the pressurized air flow to the lungs; moreover, the materials this headgear is made of varies from model to model with the mention that the patient’s comfort is the most important for the matter.

If the straps of the  sleep apnea headgear are too tight, there are high chances that you be left with more or less superficial red marks. Though the adjusting of the mask is essential so as to prevent air leaks, you need to be careful not to get your neck, chin or ears irritated. Manufacturers have also come up with a solution for the situation: the use of the so-called “strap guard” that may be ordered together with any CPAP sleep apnea headgear for a more than acceptable price. This type of strap has a special cushioning design that allows the user to sleep comfortably and safe.

The most advanced CPAP models include designs that have no sleep apnea headgear at all; they are attached directly to the nostrils by means of tubes and they allow the patient to assume a variety of sleeping positions without the slightest discomfort. Nevertheless, devices that do not rely on sleep apnea headgear are definitely a lot more expensive; you can have a look at the many strapless models available online and see how you feel about the prices.

As troublesome as it may seem, many patients do try several models of sleep apnea headgear before finally finding the one that really suits their needs. The most common complaint associated with  CPAP headgear is that the marks it leaves on the face do not disappear throughout the day, particularly if you strap the device tightly. Hence, talk to the doctor and ask for his or her personal advice concerning the shape and the design that would suit you best. Besides correctly fitting on you face, you should also be able to feel comfortable throughout the night and enjoy a proper rest.

Asthma Attacks

no comments

There have been studies correlating sleep apnea and asthma. Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder characterized by disruption in breathing as a person sleeps. The pauses are called apneas, and it can last in a period of time that normal breathing is disrupted, causing the person to skip one or more breaths. Doctors have categorized apneas to have caused a 10 second pause between breaths, and this should cause a neurological arousal or a de-saturation of blood oxygen of 3 to 4 percent or more. Both neurological arousal and blood oxygen desaturation can also occur at the same time.

There are three kinds of  sleep apnea: obstructive, central and complex. It has been estimated that 84% of sleep apneas are obstructive, 0.4% central, and 15% complex. Obstructive, which is the most common, is caused by the physical block to airflow despite the body’s efforts to breathe. Central sleep apnea has something to do with how the brain signals the body to breath, and the miscommunication interrupts the breathing. Complex sleep apnea is actually the combination of both obstructive and central, which means the two kinds of sleep apneas transition to one another.

The problem with sleep apnea, however, is the person’s inability to recognize that he or she has it, even if the person suddenly wakes up in the middle of the night. Usually, sleep apneas are identified by other people who witnesses the person’s sleeping habits. Some people who suffer from sleep apnea might go on without knowing they have it for years or even decades. Though rarely fatal, sleep apnea causes anxiety, fatigue and sleepiness during the morning.

Asthma, on the other hand, is more recognizable by many since it is largely hereditary and easily diagnosed. Though the two might be entirely different, this does not mean that they are not correlated. According to the University of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, young women who have asthma are twice likely to develop sleep apnea. They noticed that young women with asthma snores a lot while sleeping, and one of the best indicators that a person has sleep apnea is habitual snoring. Many people often disregard snoring in young adults as indicators of sleep apnea, since many have the notion that sleep apnea only affects older people (especially men). In fact, there are many groups of people who are susceptible to sleep apnea, and the researchers in the University of Cincinnati have correlated respiratory complications (due to smoking, asthma or otherwise) with sleep apnea.

Other studies also have found that asthma can cause other sleeping disorders other than sleep apnea. A support of this theory is that many asthmatics have reported sleepiness during daytime, which is an indicator of sleep apnea. However, patients who have both sleep apnea and asthma have found relief from their asthma when they were treated for their sleep apneas. The trouble with this theory is that researches have yet to concretely correlate both  sleep apnea and asthma. Though many studies have indicated that there is a connection, until they find a definite link between the two, they will still have yet to find a better way to treat both conditions.

Sleep Disorders In Children

no comments

A lot of attention has been focused on diagnosing and treating obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in adults, and rightly so. But in all this excitement and interest, we have lost sight of our children. Children are also affected by sleep disorders, including those commonly found in adults, such as snoring, obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, and restless legs syndrome. According to the National Sleep Foundation, more than two-thirds of children in America experience sleep problems at least a few nights a week. Unfortunately, children do not usually complain of sleep problems.

Did you know that snoring is not considered to be a normal condition in children? In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics has recognized the importance of screening for snoring in kids, and they recommend evaluating all children who snore for underlying sleep apnea. That’s because sleep apnea in children has been linked to several significant problems. Some of these problems include growth and developmental effects, mood and learning disorders (i.e., irritability, depression, ADHD), and social dysfunction (e.g., difficulty interacting with friends or family members). Interestingly, children with OSA do not present with symptoms similar to adults with OSA. In children with OSA, symptoms of hyperactivity, irritability, or the inability to focus and concentrate may be more common than fatigue, excessive daytime sleepiness, or unintentional dozing. However, one symptom that is often shared by both children and adults with sleep apnea is waking up feeling unrefreshed from sleep. Therefore, it’s important for adults to pay special attention to their child’s sleep habits and to look out for any overt problem signs.

Another common sleep issue is insomnia. Frequently, parents will complain that their child is not sleeping through the night, thereby affecting everyone else’s sleep. Insomnia itself is not a distinctive diagnosis in children. On the contrary, it is almost always a symptom of another underlying condition. Some examples of causes of insomnia are environmental factors, social stress (e.g., family conflicts), obstructive sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, and movement disorders. Once the underlying cause of insomnia is determined, effective treatment can be initiated. The keys are for parents or caregivers first to recognize the signs and symptoms, and then to seek the medical help of a sleep disorders specialist. Without medical attention, some sleep disorders can go on for years, being unrecognized and untreated, ultimately resulting in more severe problems in adulthood.

Finally, restless legs syndrome (RLS) has received a lot of attention recently. This attention is well deserved, because RLS is a common medical problem for both children and adults. Often people misunderstand RLS. RLS is an uncomfortable or unpleasant sensation that occurs primarily in the legs, usually in the evening or at night. It is characterized by the urge to move the legs to relieve discomfort, and movement of the legs is associated with a temporary relief of the symptoms. RLS may be due to reduced iron stores. Therefore, a medical work-up with laboratory testing is necessary to rule out any potentially treatable underlying causes, such as iron deficiency or anemia. RLS usually prevents or delays the onset of sleep, and it may cause sleep disturbance during the night. Children with RLS may complain of uncomfortable or unpleasant sensations in their legs. In some cases, children may complain of soreness in their legs. If these symptoms persist for more than a few days, then it is advisable to seek medical attention. RLS has also been associated with ADHD.

Unfortunately, sleep problems are highly prevalent among children but seldom discussed, recognized, or treated at regular office visits with the doctor. It is especially important that parents and caregivers give special attention to recognizing the signs and symptoms of potential sleep disorders. Parents and caregivers should seek the advice of a sleep disorders specialist when these problems occur. Furthermore, increasing evidence suggests that a variety of childhood sleep disorders are associated with inattention, hyperactivity, and underlying cognitive impairment that may have significant adverse effects on development and school performance. We do know that poor or inadequate sleep results in slowed metabolism, weight gain, and a generalized decline in health. The complete impact of sleep disorders on the growth and development of children is still not entirely known, but the current evidence and the growing obesity epidemic suggest that this may be a very substantial problem, indeed.
