Acid Reflux Symptoms And Sleep Apnea

Recent evidence shows a direct link between  acid reflux and sleep apnea. Studies show that a great many people who suffer from Acid Reflux Disease or GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease) report worse symptoms at night. The question still asked, though, is which came first.
Since both conditions involve an inflammation of the throat area, it is difficult to determine if one precedes the other.

In sleep apnea, the patient breathes harder because the breathing actually stops. This labored breathing may cause reflux into the esophagus. But the question can be asked in reverse as well. Does acid reflux cause sleep apnea by pooling in the esophagus and make breathing more difficult? Either way, the effects are the same and need to be addressed.

If the acid reflux is the root of sleep apnea, then it can be remedied through sleep positioning and diet therapy. Sleep positioning is where the upper body is elevated slightly to deter gastric contents from getting past the lower esophageal sphincter and into the esophagus. Basically, it’s a matter of offsetting gravity’s effect. Diet therapy means that the sufferer shouldn’t eat spicy foods right before bedtime as this helps reduce gastric activity during sleep periods. Another factor may be obesity. Diets rich in fats, grease or sugar are simply not healthy and should be adjusted.

So as you can see, this is a ‘chicken and egg’ situation when it comes to finding out which came first with acid reflux and sleep apnea. Studies are being done in this area and the findings will be reported to the gastroenterology community on completion.

One such study done recently found a ‘casual’ relationship between GERD and sleep apnea. This researcher is planning another, more detailed, program to actually measure the acidic content of regurgitated material into the esophagus. It may be that it isn’t just acidic content, but liquids ingested that are at the center of the problem.

Either way this goes, the result is similar. Material passes from the stomach into the esophagus, possibly up to the throat or mouth and causes obstructive sleep apnea to occur. On the other side, a sufferer of sleep apnea may encounter trouble breathing while asleep and this may facilitate the reflux.

It is estimated that more than 20% of Americans with weekly heartburn symptoms have GERD. When these people go to sleep, problems seem to intensify.

So if you suffer from GERD and have noticed a problem with your sleep patterns, there are a few things you can do for yourself.

1. See a doctor immediately and get a formal diagnosis.

2. Watch your food intake.

3. Look for extreme symptoms occurring at night. Document these for your physician.

4. Try relaxation techniques to relieve stress. Meditation has been used successfully.

5. Elevate the head and neck slightly and/or click here to try the special new sleep disorder pillow to avoid the reflux of gastric content into the esophagus.

In any case, if you have acid reflux and sleep apnea, see your family doctor for further details and help with your condition. It could mean the difference between a good night’s sleep and lying there awake wondering what’s wrong.

Sleep Apnea Snoring

no comments

Sleep apnea and snoring are realy directly linked. Most people who snore also have sleep apnea.

Snoring affects many people all over the globe. It does not only affect those of us who snore, but the people trying to sleep around us. Many factors may contribute to snoring such as throat muscle weakness and allergies. If you snore, it may be a good idea to visit a doctor to see if they snore due to sleep apnea, which can be a serious health problem.

Sleep apnea is a disorder in which the person suffering from it stops breathing in their sleep, usually for around ten seconds at a time. This is sometimes caused by obstructive sleep apnea which happens when the upper airway partially collapses, cutting off the ability to breathe. Sleep apnea sufferers who snore will often have their airway cut off after a brief period of snoring. They will often wake up gasping for air, which leads to them being sleep deprived. Sleep apnea snoring can occur anywhere from two hundred to four hundred times per night in extreme cases.

Luckily, there are many ways to deal with this illness. The first step is to visit your doctor so that you can be officially diagnosed. You will often need to visit a sleep clinic so that the sleep apnea can be observed and monitored. Once you have been diagnosed as having sleep apnea, you may be given a special mask that you must wear during the night. You may also need to take antihistamines or decongestants. It is also recommended that you sleep in a different position such as on your side, to help keep your airways open. If you are used to sleeping on your back, the doctor may recommend the use of a special pillow, which will help you maintain a certain position through the night.

Sleep Apnea Mask

The positioning of the sleep apnea machine to the face and the head is done by means of a device that needs to be comfortable for the user. A sleep apnea headgear usually includes two T-shaped parts one for the front and the other other for the rear side of the head. Furthermore, there is a special strap that is attached to the chin that is responsible for keeping the mask in the right position. Sleep apnea headgear is used for both CPAP and BiPAP machines that depend on masks to send the pressurized air flow to the lungs; moreover, the materials this headgear is made of varies from model to model with the mention that the patient’s comfort is the most important for the matter.

If the straps of the sleep apnea headgear are too tight, there are high chances that you be left with more or less superficial red marks. Though the adjusting of the mask is essential so as to prevent air leaks, you need to be careful not to get your neck, chin or ears irritated. Manufacturers have also come up with a solution for the situation: the use of the so-called “strap guard” that may be ordered together with any CPAP sleep apnea headgear for a more than acceptable price. This type of strap has a special cushioning design that allows the user to sleep comfortably and safe.

The most advanced CPAP models include designs that have no sleep apnea headgear at all; they are attached directly to the nostrils by means of tubes and they allow the patient to assume a variety of sleeping positions without the slightest discomfort. Nevertheless, devices that do not rely on sleep apnea headgear are definitely a lot more expensive; you can have a look at the many strapless models available online and see how you feel about the prices.

As troublesome as it may seem, many patients do try several models of sleep apnea headgear before finally finding the one that really suits their needs. The most common complaint associated with CPAP headgear is that the marks it leaves on the face do not disappear throughout the day, particularly if you strap the device tightly. Hence, talk to the doctor and ask for his or her personal advice concerning the shape and the design that would suit you best. Besides correctly fitting on you face, you should also be able to feel comfortable throughout the night and enjoy a proper rest.

Sleep Apnea In Kids

no comments

Sleep apnea in kids is becoming increasingly common and the effects of night after night of poor sleep clearly has a marked effect on the development of our children.

Although it has been known for some time now that children with sleep apnea often produce poor scores on IQ tests (typically scoring an average of 85 against a score of 101 for children without sleep apnea) what has not been known until recently is that this results from chemical changes within the brain. This means that an otherwise ’smart’ kid may well turn in a mediocre performance as a result of nothing more than a sleep disorder which, in most cases, can be quite easily treated.

In a study conducted at the Hopkin’s Children’s Centre in Baltimore, 31 children between the ages of 6 and 16 (19 of whom had severe sleep apnea) were examined using a special form or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and it was found that those children with sleep apnea showed significant changes in both the hippocampus and right frontal cortex – two areas of the brain associated with learning and higher mental function. The same study also discovered that these children had altered levels of three chemicals within the brain, indicative of brain damage.

This alteration of the brain chemistry brought about by the presence of sleep apnea may or may not be permanent and, at this stage, further studies are required to see whether or not this effect can be reversed. However, even if reversal is possible and the brain chemistry and cognitive function can be returned to normal, children with sleep apnea will suffer a loss in learning as long as they are suffering from untreated sleep apnea and they will certainly not be able to wind back the clock and regain this period of learning.

Parents should of course already be on the lookout for signs of sleep apnea in their children, but this latest study clearly indicates that an early diagnosis and treatment of this sleep disorder could have a very significant affect on a child’s success in life.

The signs of sleep apnea include frequent pauses in breathing during sleep which often result in an arousal from sleep and tossing and turning in bed. Children may also display loud or labored breathing, snoring, coughing, gasping and, occasionally, bedwetting at an age when this phase should normally have passed. Parents may also notice a child sleeping in an odd position, perhaps with their bottom sticking up in the air and their head tilted back in an unconscious effort to force their airway open.

In most cases sleep apnea in children can be treated by the surgical removal of the tonsils and adenoids, or excess tissue from the back of the throat or nose. In addition, a continuous positive airways pressure (CPAP) machine may also be used to provide the child with a flow of air delivered through a mask worn while sleeping to keep the airway open.

Sleep apnea is in itself debilitating for any child and the effects of night after night of inadequate sleep will take their toll on your child. However, when this is combined with an impairment of your child’s IQ, it becomes imperative that you act at the earliest possible opportunity to have this condition diagnosed and treated.

Help-Me-To-Sleep.com provides extensive information and advice on a whole range of sleep disorders including sleep apnea. In addition, help me to sleep looks at natural ways to provide an insomnia cure for millions of sufferers today.

What’s The Best CPAP Machine

no comments

If you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, and your doctor has prescribed use of a continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, machine, it can be difficult to decide which one will best suit your needs.  Because it is not always covered by insurance, and you are going to need it for a long time, it is best to compare the available models before you purchase a CPAP machine.  Here are a few factors to consider;

Portability

If you find yourself frequently traveling for business or pleasure, be sure to choose a model that is portable, compact, and easy to take with you.

The 420G Traveler, ZzzPap, M Series Remstar Plus DS200, and the AEIOMed Everest 2 CPAP machines are all relatively small, but the Everest 2 is the smallest even with the optional heated humidifier attached.  All of these machines are available with an optional DC power supply for you car’s cigarette lighter with the exception of the ZzzPap. The AEIOMed Everest 2 is the only CPAP machine that can be run with an optional integrated battery, making it the ideal choice for traveling by airplane.

Heated Humidifier

Clinical research has shown that CPAP patients tend to be more compliant with the addition of heated humidity to their CPAP program. All four machines have an optional heated humidifier available, but only the Everest 2’s humidifier can also be powered by the DC power supply. When choosing a CPAP machine with the heated humidifier, keep in mind how much space the machine will take up with the humidifier attached.

Adjustable Ramp and Exhalation Pressure Relief

Ramp is used to temporarily lower the air pressure initially to allow the CPAP machine user to fall asleep more easily. The pressure then gradually increases to the prescribed level. Adjustable ramp settings allow the user to set the amount of time it takes for the CPAP machine to reach the prescribed level. For instance, the Everest 2 allows the user to set the ramp time between 5 – 45 minutes in 5 minute increments.

Some CPAP machines, such as the Remstar Plus, include a feature the decreases the air flow pressure when you exhale. Exhalation pressure relief is usually not a necessary feature, and most CPAP machines that include it are much more expensive.

Most Important – Comfort

Because pressurized air requires a closed seal for it to be effective, CPAP machine users are required to wear specialized masks when sleeping. The comfort level of the masks that are required for CPAP therapy is usually what causes patients to stop use of their machine or avoid purchasing one altogether.

The DreamFit Nasal CPAP Mask is available in three sizes and features soft, stretchable straps. Straps extend around your face and over your head to hold the nasal cushion in place while the breathing tube extends up over your head to allow sleep in any position. Unfortunately, many users find the straps on their face to be uncomfortable, especially when initially trying to fall asleep.

AEIOMed’s Headrest with Nasal Seal Kit utilizes a unique fitting system called “The Perfect Fit”, which does not require any contact with your face. It folds for easy storage or travel and expels exhaust upwards instead of outwards, ensuring that anyone else in your bed is not disturbed. The specially designed nasal pillows prevent chaffing and soreness in your nose and maintain a constant seal, making the CPAP machine more effective and much quieter when used.

Before you purchase a CPAP machine, be sure to look at all of the options and features available to you. The CPAP machine you purchase should adapt to your lifestyle, not vice versa.

CPAP Headgear

sleep-apnea-mask

Sleep apnea masks provide continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and are the most effective noninvasive medical treatment to eliminate snoring and prevent sleep apnea.

The CPAP consists of a portable machine with a mask, tubes and fan. The patient wears the sealed mask, which is connected to a hose, over the nose during sleep. CPAP works by gently blowing pressurized air through the nasal passage at a pressure high enough to prevent the throat from collapsing during sleep.

In choosing a sleep apnea mask, fit is important; it should fit comfortably. There are several styles available, including the nasal, oronasal (mouth-nose combination) and the oral mask. Most masks are worn over the nose (or the nose and mouth) and are connected to a headgear, which helps in its attachment and removal.

Straps that are too loose or too tight result in leaks. A too tight strap is uncomfortable and can distort the mask cushion. Therefore, an ideal nasal mask should provide an individually tailored fit in all sleeping positions and preferably an option to be reshaped immediately in case of discomfort or leaks. Mostly the masks consist of a hard plastic body, softer silicone seal and varying features like gel cushion, flexible outer shell, pliable nose clips, etc.

The patients may also select an oral mask that delivers pressurized air through the mouth without the need of headgear. This mask requires heated humidification and the patients may wear glasses with this mask on.

Another option, the nasal pillow, is attached to a plastic adapter that is inserted into the nostrils. However, most people find nasal pillows uncomfortable.

Manufacturers offer different features of sleep apnea masks. The choice, based on fit and comfort should be made jointly by both the physician and the patient.

Sleep Apnea – Silencing a Killer

no comments

If you experience problems with snoring, you may have more problems than you bargained for. Snoring not only robs you of a decent nights sleep, it can antagonize those around you who have to listen to it . On the more serious side, there may be an underlying health issue that can be quite dangerous – sleep apnea. If you happen to suffer from this condition, there are some things that you can do about it.

Sleep Apnea actually comes in 2 forms. Obstructive which occurs whenever the muscles in your throat relax and end up blocking your ability to breathe and central which has to do with your brain not sending you the proper breathing signals and you end up not breathing for periods of time at night. Regardless of which type you suffer from, there are some natural things that you can do in order to overcome it. It is a serious situation and should be treated as such.

The most important thing that you can do in order to overcome thecondition is to make some lifestyle changes. A huge contributing factor can often be excess weight on your body so shed a few pounds if you can. Another thing that you can to do is to avoid alcohol before bedtime as this can exasperate the symptoms. It might also be your sleeping position that is causing you to snore. Sleep apnea seems to strike more when people sleep on their backs so a switch to sleeping on your side or stomach may reduce symptoms. Keeping your nasal passages clear with some saline spray may also help you to breathe better through your nose and less through your mouth. It may take some effort on your part to overcome this life threatening condition. The good news is there are natural ways to manage it.

Why Sleep Apnea Needs Treatment

no comments

Sleep apnea is a condition or disorder where you stop breathing for several seconds.  A blockage or obstruction in the upper respiratory airways is the common cause for this disorder and is called the obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).  Another one is a faulty wiring in the brain so to speak.  The brain fails to give the commands to the muscles responsible for breathing such as the ones in the diaphragm and rib cage.

Many people are afflicted with this disorder but they don’t know they have it.  People who have sleep apnea are disrupted in their by the ‘cessation of breath’ several times each night. It could even occur more than a hundred times.  That would mean getting no quality sleep which is very important for our health.

They wake up in the morning feeling not refreshed and spend the day being less productive in work and sleepy since quality sleep is deprived.

Every time sleep apnea occurs, the brain is deprived of oxygen.  The duration of not breathing lasts 10 or more seconds.  Oxygen in the lungs becomes depleted and carbon dioxide which is supposed to be exhaled lingers and accumulates.  In the long run this causes brain damage mainly in the area where short term memories are processed.

Since sleep is disrupted several times during the night, the required sleep cycle for proper rest is not achieved.  Take for example the deep sleep cycle where most of the physical and nervous system repair functions of our body occurs cannot be completed.  This sleep deprivation can cause depression, weight gain, heart disorders, stress, anxiety and so on.

In obstructive sleep apnea, lying supine or in your back can increase the occurrence of this condition.  The muscles and tissues of the upper respiratory airways tend to relax in this position thereby increasing the tendency of blockage or obstruction.  Experts advise that people with sleep apnea lie on their sides to prevent the natural tendency of the airways to become blocked.  Comfortable sleeping materials like latex mattress, air mattress or memory foam mattress are best suited for this to obtain comfort and thereby better sleep.

Sleep deprivation is dangerous since you are not fully refreshed making you not being fully alert during daytime.  Because of that, risks during driving or operating machinery lurks every time.

If you exhibit symptoms of this disorder such as snoring, daytime sleepiness, gasping for breath while sleeping, memory loss, becoming overweight, depression, etc., you better consult a medical practitioner so that it can be treated if you are diagnosed with sleep apnea.  If you sleep with a partner, he or she may have noticed your gasping for breath during sleep.

There are several treatments of sleep apnea which you can talk about with your physician.  One such treatment is to wear a sort of oxygen mask. This exerts a constant flow of air to your nose so that when your air passage is blocked, the air pressure will push it open.  Other options are available and in extreme cases, surgery may be necessary.

To prevent brain damage or accidents because of sloppy brain functioning, do check with a physician if you suspect you have sleep apnea.

By: feel good Find out why quality sleep is important and how to relieve yourself of stress and anxiety. For utmost comfort and rest, sleep on air mattress beds.

Children And Sleep Disorders

Baby On A CPAP Machine

Children And Sleep Disorders

It may come as a big shock to recognize that youngsters have a considerable amount of trouble sleeping that stop a child from getting a full night’s sleep.  Reports show that on average 30 percent of young people genuinely suffer from sleep problems in their early years.

These types of sleep problems can include sleep walk, night terrors and possibly even more severe problems like sleep apnea and other grave breathing circumstances.  Most people don’t understand that kids in their school years need to get between nine and twelve hours sleep but unfortunately, many children get considerably less than that.

There are other disturbances include bedwetting, grinding teeth, sleep talking, as well as rolling or banging their heads are all thought to be serious sleep problems if they occur during sleep.  The usual of these are nightmares and night terrors and walking in their sleep but they are a good degree more harmless than the others.

If a child has a sleep walking problem, then parents must work to make sure that they keep tabs on their child’s problem so it won’t end up in injury for the child.  This can be done by ensuring there are no dangerous areas around the home.  In most cases, the child will outgrow the majority of sleep disorders by the time they reach their teenage years.

A primary care physician can give advice in any case of nightmares, head banging, teeth grinding, bedwetting and more severe problems such as sleep apnea.  All of these could be signs that there are more severs problems if they still show symptoms well beyond the average age of the child. It is fortunate that many of these circumstances have an age where the average child will have outgrown them.

Think about the symptoms of child sleep troubles if the child has problems concentrating in class.  They may also fall asleep when they are travelling in a car or talking to someone or while reading or in class.  These could potentially be signals that your child is having difficulty sleeping when they are trying to get their full night’s rest.  In the case of sleep apnea watch for symptoms like breathing through the mouth as well as issues with performance in school or restless sleep.

The best things about these types of sleep problems is that they happen to be the easiest to treat and for the most part can be due to a simpler malady.  Until your child begins exhibiting signs that are dangerous for them so rest easy knowing that kids will tend to grow out of their sleep disorders.  However, if you are still having concerns then talking to your doctor will afford you the opportunity to explore several actions to take in the home in order to put your child on the right track.

You must consider that in children with troubled sleep there are likely many other mental and physical circumstances that will influence how well your child sleeps.  Your primary care provider may request a consultation with a specialist in mental health to make sure things like ADHD aren’t at play.

Stop Snoring

no comments

Stop Snoring – Do You Have A Snoring Problem?

Snoring is an incredibly prevalent condition suffered by up to 60% of men, and 40% of women.[1]
From time to time everyone snores.  But, if you snore pretty much all the time while sleeping, you may actually have a real snoring problem.

People often joke about snoring, yet it can create serious problems within a family.  Many couples can’t sleep in the same room because of snoring.

Snoring can be disruptive to your sleep and the restful sleep of an entire household.  Exposing each household member to the risks of sleep deprivation.

Snoring is almost always evidence of a sleep breathing problem.  Sleep-related breathing disorders puts the sufferer at risk of some serious medical conditions:  High blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, alzheimers, diabetes, depression and others.

Snoring is known to cause sleep deprivation, daytime drowsiness, irritability, lack of focus
reduced sex drive and significant psychological and social damage to snorers.

If you snore, it’s important to realize that your snoring may be reaking havoc on your health and that of your partner and or household. The sooner you find a solution that works for you to stop snoring, the better.

What causes snoring?

As you doze off and progress from a lighter sleep to a deep sleep, the muscles in the roof of your mouth (soft palate), tongue and throat relax. The tissues in your throat can relax enough that they vibrate and may partially obstruct your airway. The more narrowed your airway, the more forceful the airflow becomes. Tissue vibration increases, and your snoring grows louder.[2]

Contributing Factors:

Snoring may indicate the presence of more serious underlying medical conditions. Such as, sleep apnea, deviated nasal septum (a crooked partition between the nostrils) or enlarged tonsils. These can all block or obstruct the movement of air through the airway.

Some other contributors are: too much alcohol consumption before bedtime, Nasal congestion.

Approximately 10% of snorers suffer from sleep apnea.[1] Sleep Apnea sufferers are actually deprived of oxygen for prolonged periods of time during sleep, which can have a massive impact on their health (with potentially fatal consequences) if the disorder isn’t properly treated. Sleep apnea is often characterized by loud snoring followed by periods of silence that can last 10 seconds or more.[2]

Thus, to stop snoring the key would be to eliminate or reduce the obstruction or constriction of the airway, to permit normal unhindered breathing.

Your first step should be to consult with your Physician or medical professional. If you have any underlying medical disorders that cause snoring, they must be treated immediately and properly.

How to Stop Snoring?

Everyone is different so you may have to try many different techniques, variations or combinations in order to find the right stop snoring solution for you. Be sure to keep in mind what is specifically causing You to snore. There is generally no point using a solution that targets a problem that you don’t have.

Here are a few tips you should try to reduce, or stop snoring:
It would be wise to see your doctor and possibly have a sleep study done.

1. Avoid alcohol consumption close to bedtime it
relaxes your jaw and throat muscles too severely.

2. Stop smoking -irritates breathing passages causing
swelling closing them off and straining respiration

3 loose weight -reduce excess fatty tissue around the neck
to reduce the strain on your windpipe

4. Use a pillow

5. Sleep on your side

6. Clear the nasal passages -try using nasal strips

7. Nasal spray

8. Medication -if nothing else works

9. Surgery – a last resort – it doesn’t always work and may not
be suitable or necessary for everyone that snores.

To find your solution to stop snoring, first specifically determine why YOU snore. It is not necessarily the same reason as anyone else. Your snoring could actually be the result of multiple problems. Not every solution will work for you.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

no comments

Obstructive sleep apnea could prove fatal and so you need to be aware of the symptoms and seek immediate treatment.

Snoring becomes a serious problem when it causes you to stop breathing.. This is known as sleep apnea and can cause the sufferer to wake up at frequent intervals during the night.

The most common type is  obstructive sleep apnea. During snoring the airways become narrower as the soft tissue at the back of the throat including the tonsils, uvula and soft palate relax and move around, however during sleep apnea the airways become so narrow that they close up completely stopping the flow of oxygen into the body.

This can last for several seconds and in some cases up to a minute, but reflex actions cause the sufferer to wake up and start breathing again.

These interruptions to sleep can happen over several hundred times a night. The heart has to work much harder and could lead to heart failure if not treated.

Sleep apnea can also lead to poor concentration during the day and tiredness which can affect your performance at work as well as your relationships

You should visit your doctor as soon as possible to discuss methods of treatment if you suffer from sleep apnea. Many treatments for obstructive sleep apnea don’t involve surgery and may require you to change your diet or exercise to lose weight.

You may be advised to use a nasal spray or wear a dental appliance. There is a machine called a CPAP or continuous positive airway pressure which requires you to wear a face mask that continually delivers constant air pressure to keep the airways open.

Sometimes a surgical procedure called LAUP is used to remove excess tissue from the throat using a laser. It takes about half an hour and is done using a local anaesthetic. It may though require more than one session if the problem is very severe.

Snoring can be disruptive not only to the sufferer but also their partner and sleep apnea certainly requires urgent attention as it could prove fatal if left untreated.

Sleep Apnea Killing Your Marriage

Sleep Apnea Killing Your Marriage ?

Sleep Apnea or Obstructive Sleep Apnea as it is sometimes called, usually involves loud snoring as one of the symptoms.  Anyone that has ever slept with a snoring partner knows that it can be seriously disruptive to one’s own sleep.  But what effect, long term, does it have on a marriage?  It is a common situation in many marriages and apparently has more impact than many couples think.

Obviously the experience of sleeping with a loud snoring partner is not positive, but what can be done?  This is the question that The Sleep Disorders Center at Rush University Medical Center recently set out to ask and hopefully solve.  In doing so, they hope to save marriages that might be in danger of divorce due to this cronic, ongoing struggle to get enough rest at night….and all the interpersonal implications of not achieving a balanced level of sleep.

The Center is currently evaluating 10 couples in which the male has been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea. The couples begin by completing surveys about sleepiness, marriage satisfaction and quality of life. After this step the couples spend the night in the Center’s sleep lab where technicians determine each partner’s quantity and quality of sleep.

Two weeks after these tests, and treatment, the couple repeats a night’s sleep in the sleep lab for comparison purposes.  The results have been very interesting and mostly positive.

According to press releases from the Center, the early results show that there is indeed a significant impact on the wife’s quality and quantity of sleep.  It is termed a serious problem that does indeed lead to a hostile and tense situation within the marriage.

In one example cited, the husband’s snoring was arousing the wife out of sleep over eight times an hour.  Her sleep efficiency rating (the percentage of time she was actually asleep) was 73%. The average person’s sleep efficiency is closer to 90%.

In this example, the wife had attempted to use ear plugs, earphones and had finally given up and started to sleep alone.

To treat the husband, the Center used a device known as a continuous positive airway pressure machine (CPAP).  This machine is non-invasive and the flow of air it delivers prevents the upper airway from collapsing during sleep, allowing the lungs to perform normally.

In this particular case, the wife’s quality of life measure jumped from a 1.2 to a 7.0, indicating that the snoring had been alleviated and was no longer significantly bothering her.  Her sleepiness scale (how tired she felt) dropped from 12 to a 6.  Marital Satisfaction scores improved from a 3 to 5.8 and the wife’s sleep efficiency moved up from 73% to 82%.

Obviously on every level, this treatment had made great strides for the couple and showed promise in other situations.

The Rush Center is continuing tests expected to be completed in April 2006.  The Center will evaluate the results and expand on the information being provided to the public.

Their press release is very specific about the measures taken as each couple enters the program.  As stated “…both the husband and wife undergo simultaneous polysomonography, a sleep test that monitors brain activity, eye movements, muscle activity, heart rate and rhythms, breathing patterns, blood oxygen level and body movements and respiratory sounds.  All sensors are noninvasive and do not cause pain or discomfort.

The study involves first diagnosing the sleep apnea.  The husband will sleep alone in the center as technicians monitor his sleep.  If he has sufficient sleep apnea, he will undergo a split night study to determine the appropriate CPAP treatment.

Sleep apnea is a serious health problem that should be treated.  Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the tissue in the back of the throat collapses and blocks the airway.  The breathing pause lasts at least 10 seconds and can occur 10 or more times an hour.  Apnea lowers the oxygen level in the blood leaving the patient vulnerable to hypertension, stroke and other cardiovascular problems.

Obstructive sleep apnea can occur in men and women of any age; however, it is most common in obese, middle-aged men.  The most common signs of sleep apnea are loud snoring, choking or gasping during sleep, and fighting sleepiness during the day.  In addition to continuous positive airway pressure, treatment includes losing weight, sleeping on your side instead of your back, avoiding alcohol and tobacco.”

Central Sleep Apnea

no comments

Central sleep apnea is the rare type of sleep apnea

Many of us are familiar with sleep apnea but not many of us know central sleep apnea which is one of the rarest kinds.  In this article what it is, the causes and possible treatment is being discussed.

There are a few types of sleep apnea, off all of these central sleep apnea is one of the rarest kinds that do not affect too many people and in fact, it occurs just because there may be problems receiving and transmitting brain signals which result in periodic stopped breathing while you are sleeping.  What’s more, if you happen to have this rare form of sleep apnea, you may also become affected by obstructive sleep apnea that is the more common form of sleep apnea and which, as the name implies, occurs due to blocked or obstructed airways.

Using A Drug Called Ambien

Certainly, there are many different types of treatment methods available for handling obstructive sleep apnea, though the same cannot be said in the case of central sleep apnea, even in spite of recent advancements in using a sleep drug named Ambien that will surely benefit you in case you use it to treat central sleep apnea. However there is no doubting the fact that, according to evidence gathered as a result of studies made on patients using Ambien to cure central sleep apnea, the effectiveness of Ambien has been proven to be quite good, and this can be seen when considering that the drug helped in reducing sleep apnea episodes from an average of thirty to thirteen per patient.

However, there is still need to study the long term effects of Ambien as a drug to treat central sleep apnea and thus before considering using it for your central sleep apnea problem, be apprised that Ambien has yet to be fully tested for this use and you should also not use it unless specifically recommended by your doctor.  It would also pay to know the difference between central sleep apnea and obstructive sleep apnea and even become aware whether you don’t in fact have a third type of sleep apnea, which is known as mixed sleep apnea that is basically a combination of both types of sleep apnea types.

Also, though the symptoms of both obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea can sometimes be similar, the causes for each kind are more than likely going to be different in each case.  As mentioned, central sleep apnea is a very rare type of sleep apnea and it is quite unlike the more common obstructive sleep apnea, and if you have the former, you will surely experience difficulties in brain timing, which when it does not fire the way that it should will result in inadequate oxygen while you are sleeping.

Also, it is common for those suffering from central sleep apnea to wake up numerous times during the night and they will also gasp or choke for breath, and such episodes can occur as many as hundred times in a night thereby robbing the patient of valuable sleep and rest.  So, whether you suspect having central sleep apnea or obstructive sleep apnea, you need to consult your doctor and get a treatment program prescribed at the earliest in order to get much needed relief.

If you would like to know about sleep apnea, it causes and treatments please go to Central Sleep Apnea treatment for central sleep apnea sleeping problems info.  All you need to know about sleeping problems

Sleep Apnea Dental Devices

Many of the underlying causes of sleep apnea can presently be tackled with by a sleep apnea dentist; there is even a medical branch known as dental sleep dentistry that has known an increase in the number of specialists over the last decade. Medical practice has shown that sleep apnea may be caused by certain dental and mandibular problems that can be corrected by the surgical or non-surgical intervention of a dentist. Thus, there are all sorts of dental appliances used for the maintenance of a proper opening of the airways and only a sleep apnea dentist can recommend and design one for you.

In case the apnea patient suffers from a jaw deformity or mandibular deficiency that prevents the correct opening of the airways in a deep relaxation state, a sleep apnea dentist will have to create a special appliance to be worn at night. Such a device would either pull the tongue forward or adjust the position of the jaw so that the air flow may pass unhindered towards the lungs. It should be said nevertheless, that the apnea dentist solutions usually work for the mild and moderate sleep breathing cessation problems, as the more severe cases require other forms of medical intervention.

After close medical investigations a sleep apnea dentist will tell you what type of oral device best matches your condition. The two most popular such devices include the splint and the mandibular advancement device. The former holds the tongue in a position that allows the air to pass unhindered; this is mainly used for people who suffer from apnea caused by too large a tongue as compared to the diameter of the airways. The latter is a device that forces the jaw in a lower position, thus creating enough room for the air flow; the only problem with the mandibular device consists in the eventual jaw pain after its usage.

Regular visits to the sleep apnea dentist may be necessary particularly if you experience discomfort after the trial period is over. If you don’t get used to an oral apnea device within a fortnight, contact the sleep apnea dentist and see how you can improve the situation. Do not purchase any type of apnea appliance since such items require a certain size and molding design that is unique for each individual. A general model will surely be very uncomfortable, even if you’d think it a real bargain.
